“We had a situation in which keeping to agreements could be improved, in which some people worked very hard while for others it was ‘nine to five’, and in which small groups were ‘doing their own thing’. At first I thought that it would be enough to hold a traditional, strongly worded speech. We asked Jane Zuidema for her advice, because some colleagues had earlier positive experiences with her in her role as personal coach”, Gerard Majoor explains. “While waiting for the first presentation she showed that a colleague was behaving like a ‘complaining child’. We’re technicians at Drachten, and Jane made us aware that we had to address the root causes of our behavior by looking at the underlying reasons for it. She presented Open Mind Management and sent us some work on Transactional Analysis to provide us with the scientific proof. Based on that, we started with a process in which 210 people are being trained to understand their own behavior as well as each other’s. This is proving to be very practical. The first groups have now been trained, and we can see that we’ve learned to hold each other accountable for behavior and to respond in an adult way. We’re now better at keeping to our agreements, and our meetings are more structured.”
